Over the course of a couple of months, me, Elias Siljan and Fredrik Storehaug worked on a game project duped “Traveling Planet”. We made it in Unity, and I had the chance to experiment a lot with stylized shading and effects there. We wanted a toony look, with outlines and everything, and after a lot of research I ended up picking a method where the shader itself extended an inverted hull of the model to create the outline effect. For planet surfaces I did procedural shading, but where the light itself was used to create a toony illusion of depth and texture. The sun is basically an amalgamation of particle effects.
Eventually the project was iced, but it was a lot of fun, and I am pretty satisfied with some of the visuals:
